Of course he didn't know it then. he was without friends and his family, as far as he knew, had been killed. So he survived as much and as best as he could. One day, he saw a man actin weird and followed the man into the subway. Somehow, he found himself in a cave with weird statues and a strange old man in robes, sitting on a throne.
The man introduced himself as Shazam and bid the child to say his name. The boy did and was transformed into a superhuman, thirty-two years of age, with powers and abilities far beyond those normally possessed by mortal men. And then a rock fell on the wizard, killing him. The boy was, reasonably, horrified, but a voice in his head told him to wait.
Minutes later the lights went out. When they came back on, the rock was gone but now a flickering image of the wizard sat in his throne. He explained hat the kid had been chosen to become a champion and by saying Shazam, which actually symbolized the powers he gained, he would become Captain Marvel, able to help others and defeat the forces of wrong.
The kid was, understandably overwhelmed, but he tried to deal with it. And so two years passed. He eventually discovered his sister was alive and shared his powers with her, enabling her too to become a Captain Marvel. And they were eventually adopted by others. Things seemed to be going pretty well.
Then one day, the kid was trapped by a spell, and unable to become Captain Marvel. he tried to stop a bad man from hurting his friends, but he couldn't and was forced to watch them die, completely helpless. It hurt him, way down deep. He felt completely useless, helpless.
He swore that day that he would find a way to be more as Billy, to be useful as who he really was, and not just as the person he could become with other's powers. He got an old friend of his adopted parents to start training him in boxing a little. But still, he felt... weak. And then, one day, he wandered into Milliways and found a world of wonders."
